The College is seeking a full-time DSPS Counselor to support this mission, commencing with the Fall 2022 semester. The DSPS Counselor will be part of a team of professionals who develop and implement comprehensive disability support services designed to meet legal mandates and student success.

General Description:

This is a full-time, tenure track assignment in the DSPS Department at Merced College under the direction of the Director of DSPS. The incumbent will be responsible for the provision of counseling and support services to students with disabilities enrolled in Merced Community College District, and in maintaining legal compliance with all district policies, as well as all State and Federal mandates. Provides supportive services for students with learning, physical and/or psychological disabilities. DSPS offers services beyond those provided to the mainstream Merced College programs and "enables" students with disabilities to successfully pursue their educational, vocational and personal goals. Counseling, support services, and academic accommodations are provided to students who are eligible for the program.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions:

• Provide specialized academic counseling services including disability management, career and personal counseling to students with disabilities.
• Assist students in the development of comprehensive education plans.
• May teach career guidance classes and/or DSPS courses.
• Evaluate reports and other documentation for the purpose of determining program eligibility and appropriate support services.
• Evaluate and interpret psychometric assessment information to identify educational limitations and necessary support services.
• Serve as an advocate for students with disabilities while maintaining effective relationships with faculty, staff and administration.
• Provide information on college major and certificate programs as they relate to educational and career development; participate in student and campus activities.
• Participate in the development and facilitation of DSPS workshops, orientations, and other programs for students with disabilities.
• Contribute to the development, assessment of, and completion of student learning outcomes and service area outcomes and program review.
• Participate in departmental, area and campus professional activities/committees.
• Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

• Master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling

OR

• Master’s degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling, or a Bachelor’s degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services program or in a program dealing with people with disabilities, or two years of fulltime experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following:

(A) Counseling for students with disabilities; or

(B) Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities are for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent.

AND

• Candidate must have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Preferred:

• Must have the ability to understand the implications of and deal effectively with the behaviors resulting from specific disabilities.
• Demonstrated leadership working in postsecondary educational settings with students with Intellectual Disabilities and Autism.
• Knowledge and experience in developing collaborations with community resources including but not limited to Regional Center; and the California Department of Rehabilitation.
• Experience in developing disability awareness activities.
• Experience working with learning communities, cooperative programs, and/or inter-agency partnerships.
• Knowledge and experience of typical college governance systems.
• Extensive experience working with college students with a broad range of disability related educational limitations.
• General knowledge of tests and measurements commonly used for diagnostic assessment of students with disabilities.
• Knowledge of current Student Success and Support Program requirements and processes.
• Current technology skills related to the discipline and a willingness to pursue future technological developments.
