Position Title: Student Success Specialist
Division/Department: STEP/Career Pathways

Job Summary:
Actively engages in the recruitment of STEP (SNAP Training and Employment Program) participants. Provides information and assistance to students to access College and community services and resources, and supports student success in college by providing career coaching, college readiness skills, and job search services and training. Provides a range of services to faculty, staff and students in support of the STEP program objectives. Supports student success and progress towards completion of remedial education, vocational training and work experience. Provides coaching and tutoring in academic, life and employability skills. Cultivates collaborative relationships with LBCC and workforce development partners. Assists with grants and budget oversight.
Required Qualifications:
Education and Experience: Position requires an AA/AS degree plus a minimum of two years progressively responsible experience in education, adult case management, human services, or a related area, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position. Experience must include working with students or clients involving mentoring activities and/or the set up and support of learning experiences with adults.
Licenses or Certificates: Must have a valid Oregon driver’s license and own transportation, or be able to access own transportation to and from various business locations when required.
Knowledge and Skills: Must have a working knowledge of practices and techniques sufficient to provide individual and group coaching on college and career success strategies. Requires welldeveloped communication skills. Requires good presentation and public speaking skills. Requires knowledge of and skills with personal computers and applicable database and word processing applications. Must be able to work respectfully with individuals from all cultures, backgrounds and perspectives.
Abilities:
Requires the ability to independently carry out the duties of the position efficiently and effectively. Must have the ability to understand and interpret staff instructions in order to assist students. Requires the ability to understand the learning-related needs of diverse students and appropriately and sensitively respond to those needs. Requires ability to develop trust and rapport to successfully work with a diverse population of students. Must be able to operate general office equipment, including computers with word processing.
Preferred Qualifications:
A working knowledge of DHS and LBCC programs, services, policies, and procedures, as well as familiarity with other college and community resources. A strong knowledge of STEP, TANF and other assistance programs, and a working knowledge of Oregon Promise, Oregon Opportunity and other funding sources to help students pay for college. Bachelors Degree in related field. Experience working with low income, first generation students and/or students with disabilities. Bilingual language skills, especially English and Spanish.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Must be able to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and speaking and hearing ability sufficient to carry on routine and formal conversations in person, in large groups, and over the phone.
Work is typically performed in an office setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Occasional travel may be required.
Essential Duties:
  • Provides case-management for STEP participants by assisting in identifying education and employment barriers and developing strategies for college and career success through assessment and planning. Performs ongoing assessment of labor market trends (wages, jobs availability, growth potential, etc.), college programs, and local economy needs for continuous quality improvement of certificate programs and career coaching.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of program processes and related tools, including documents for outreach, college and career coaching and referral to campus and community partners.
  • Assists with STEP grants and budget oversight by tracking outcomes, performing monthly reports and quarterly invoices, summarizing qualitative data, and monitoring the budget. Participates in STEP statewide quarterly meetings, conference calls, and consultations with other STEP programs in the state. Delivers classroom presentations and workshops related to STEP grant objectives.
  • Works with local DHS offices for outreach and coaching and collaborates with other community partners on support and referral. Participates in some cases, facilitates campus-wide work groups that address solutions to student affordability issues such as childcare, food and housing insecurity, transportation, and others.
  • Works with STEP participants to navigate various college and DHS systems to maintain STEP eligibility while in school and transitioning into living-wage jobs and self-sufficiency. Creates and maintains a comprehensive resource library for participants.
  • Assists STEP participants with job search, preparation, and training in career success skills, i.e. job applications, resume writing, interviewing, and employability skills. Conducts workshops on related topics as well as the local economy and labor trends.
  • Provides instructional support and coaching for STEP participants related to college success strategies, i.e. self-assessment, time and stress management, and study skills. Identifies students’ needs and collaborates with faculty and other STEP staff members to support student’s success. Makes referrals to appropriate resources where needed.
  • Trains, assists, and oversees peer mentors and work-study student workers to help students engage and navigate LBCC’s student environment and activities.
  • Collaborates with internal and external service providers to help students access appropriate remedial education (ABE/GED), vocational training (short term and Career Pathway Certificates) work experience (CWE) and jobs according to their qualifications and interests.
  • Actively engages in STEP recruitment activities through the Dept. of Human Services (DHS), WorkSource Oregon, and other community-based organizations. Assists with other department-wide initiatives related to Career Pathways and Empower (Adult Re-entry program). Updates and maintains department Webpage information related to and outlined in the grants they support or are assigned.
  • Provides Case Management for Career Pathways students including data tracking and approval of financial support. Assists in gathering/preparing budget information. Monitors monthly and annual budgets for STEP and Career Pathways grants, including monthly workbooks to the state, and quarterly invoices to the state consortium for Step and Career Pathways.
  • Prepares purchase orders/quotes, invoices, bills, accounts payable vouchers, advances and reimbursements. Researches budget discrepancies in accounting and confers with manager. Assists in corrections, realigning funds, preparing journal entries, redistributions, or transferring funds as necessary.
  • Develops budget reports and audits accounting reports. Prepares statistical reports as requested.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
