Position Summary:

The Assistant Director of Academic Counseling (AD) represents the Office of Academic Counseling and serves on the office’s leadership team. The AD oversees the day-to-day operations for student academic advising, institutional retention efforts, maintains a reduced advising workload specializing in special programs and at-risk populations, and works closely with the Registrar’s Office and Information Technology to manage the department’s integrated information systems.

Incumbents must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and student. They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.)

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree and a minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in higher education or a combination of education, training, and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position’s essential duties.

Successful Candidate must have or must possess:

  • Experience with building a team and leading in a positive direction with a focus on providing excellent service to students
  • Experience in comprehending and analyzing data, creating reports, and presentations, suggesting recommendations and making data-informed decisions
  • Experience with providing excellent customer service
  • Experience with managing multiple, competing priorities and prioritizing projects in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to critical details
  • Experience with adapting to constant change
  • Experience in maintaining the standards of confidentiality as established by the profession

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs
  • Experience with SIS software and data reporting tools (i.e. PowerBI, etc.)
  • Experience working with online and/or adult learners

Example of Job Duties:

Under the direction of the Director of Academic Services, the Assistant Director is accountable for overseeing the daily academic advising operations by effective performance in these essential areas:

  • Work closely with the Registrar’ Office to manage the department’s integrated information system
  • Utilize reporting tools to develop and execute reports for tracking, analysis, and quality assurance
  • Manage early alerts and other at-risk student populations
  • Collaborate with college departments to manage new students, track enrollment progress, and offer a holistic approach towards retention of new students
  • Assist with budget preparation and development by compiling and consolidating data
  • Serve as an Academic Counselor for special program population with a reduced advising workload
  • Oversee the daily procedures and communication plan for the department
  • Assist and participate with commencement preparation and day of event

In addition to the accountabilities listed above, the incumbent is required to carry out the essential duties of: Attendance and participation at convocation and commencement ceremonies; Service on assigned committees and task forces; Attendance and participation at committee, staff, informational and professional meetings. These may involve attendance at evening or weekend events.

Starting Salary:

Anticipated salary; $70,954 approximate annual plus excellent State of CT medical insurance, retirement, and related fringe benefits.

Selection Procedure:
