Job Summary

The Credit for Prior Learning Director is expected to provide leadership and strategic direction to implement and manage Salt Lake Community College (SLCC)’s prior learning assessment (PLA) structure to support student access and success. They will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administrators in Academic and Student Affairs to frame procedures which incorporate best practices specific to prior learning assessment and competency-based learning. The Director will be responsible to promote credit for prior learning opportunities, coordinate assessment workflows, create and maintain detailed resource materials, and train stakeholders. This is an at-will position.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT LEADERSHIP
Provide leadership and strategic management of a formalized college-wide PLA structure. Engage regularly with stakeholders to set and publish processes which align with Utah System of Higher Education and institutional policies. Create student and system workflows, clarify roles and responsibilities of offices in the workflow, and deliver training. Lead the PLA Strategy Team to collaboratively work through, set, and publish process details. Meet with community employers and external bodies to represent the PLA structure at SLCC. Regularly analyze key PLA metrics, evaluate policy and procedures, and engage stakeholders to determine effectiveness of PLA practices as aligned with institutional goals of access, equity, and completion. Direct changes to PLA processes based on results and feedback to guarantee awarding credit for prior learning is used by all student groups. Develop and manage the PLA marketing plan with Institutional Marketing.
PLA TRAINING and INSTRUCTION
Oversee the creation of and delivery of training of PLA in general and for specific system roles and responsibilities. In general, maintain frequent communication between PLA Office and SLCC departments regarding best practices in PLA learning assessment, state and national trends, issues, and challenges. The Director is responsible to create detailed materials and training various stakeholders specific to their roles and responsibilities in PLA system expectations, methods, and procedures. They will collaborate with the Faculty Development Center and Schools to engage with and train faculty members on both developing authentic assessment metrics (such as challenge exams) and assessing student provided evidence of prior learning (such as skills demonstration or portfolio review). Training materials will be delivered in-person and virtually (both synchronously and asynchronously) and available for reference.
PLA SYSTEMS and INFORMATION
Define and manage various systems to support PLA infrastructure for students, faculty, and staff. Develop a system where students meet with an advisor to discuss PLA opportunities and pre-assess their prior learning, route students’ prior learning documentation for assessment to the appropriate academic area, support the prior learning evaluation, and work with the Office of the Registrar and Academic Records to ensure awarded credit is appropriately recorded on the students’ academic record. Define, train, and support a faculty evaluation system to receive, evaluate, and return awarding recommendations of students’ prior learning. Ensure all PLA assessments and practices are reliable, valid, fair, and authentic. Evaluate, revise, and create other workflow systems as needed. Maintain PLA information in the SLCC catalog, SLCC website, and other transparent communication channels.
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
Assist the Assistant Provost as requested. Participate on various college committees and task forces as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Earned master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with coursework in management, leadership, higher education, public administration, or closely related fields.
• Three (3) or more years of closely related, full-time, paid work experience in a higher education setting.

Preferred Qualifications

• Three (3) or more years of administrative experience at a community college, college, or university.
• Three (3) or more years of experience with best practices in the assessment of students’ prior learning and related academic activities.
• Three (3) or more year of experience in curriculum and academic planning.
• Three (3) or more years of experience in registration, records, financial aid, or other student-facing role in higher education.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Thorough understanding of policies, processes, and best practices specific to prior learning assessment (PLA) and competency-based learning.
• Understanding of state-wide and national trends, issues, and expectations in PLA.
• Experience developing a variety of assessment options for student learning outcomes, preferably in a higher education setting.
• Experience in curriculum development and instructional program design and assessment.
• Understanding of student registration, academic records, financial aid, veteran’s services, and degree audit.
• Demonstrative qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Extensive reporting and presentation skills to communicate with colleagues internally and externally.
• Experience developing content and conducting workshops and training to college faculty and staff.
• Ability to work successfully with faculty, academic administrators, and student affairs staff & administrators in both individual and group settings.
• Demonstrated success building and maintaining interpersonal relationships.
• Ability to work under minimal supervision and manage multiple priorities.
• Ability to creatively and independently problem solve by prioritizing, organizing, and multitasking during peak times while maintaining flexibility to address urgent concerns.
• Knowledge of strategic and tactical planning, including budgeting and financial analysis.
• Excellent computer skills; specifically, Microsoft Office applications, academic software platforms, and others.
• Ability to respectively serve and appreciate individuals with diverse personalities and backgrounds.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
• Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
