Student Support Services Director

Independence Community College (ICC) seeks applications for the position of Director in its federally funded Student Support Service (SSS) program. ICC is located in Southeast Kansas.

Position Summary
The college is seeking a team-oriented professional for the position of SSS Director to lead tutoring, counseling, and support for qualifying students in all academic areas within established federal guidelines. The SSS program provides academic support services for disadvantaged students. One hundred percent (100%) of the directors time will be spent administering and managing the SSS program.

Qualifications
Minimum of a masters degree from an institution accredited by a nationally recognized accreditation agency required. Experience in managing staff and budgets required. Experience working with disadvantaged students required. Three years experience in an education setting, community college experience preferred. Experience with management of federal programs preferred. TRiO program experience is highly desirable. The SSS Director must espouse a collaborative work ethic and a philosophy of higher education that is compatible with the mission of a comprehensive community college. Either a copy of, or authorization for, a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) is required.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of a Director. 1. Position generally requires light work with occasional lifting of 50 pounds or more, carrying supplies, equipment. The job requires varying amounts of sitting, climbing, kneeling, standing and walking.
2. This position requires the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time. It also requires constant hand grasp and finger dexterity; extended standing, walking and repetitive leg and arm movements; occasional bending; reaching forward, side-to-side, downward and overhead; and squatting and kneeling. The ability to communicate verbally with an excellent comprehension of the English language is essential.
3. Work is generally performed in an indoor setting.

Position Information
Full-time twelve-month position. Salary range is commensurate with education and experience, with benefits package.

The SSS Director reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and is responsible for the overall day-to-day administration and coordination of the federally-funded SSS program, which provides academic support services for disadvantaged students.

Primary Responsibilities
1. Monitor activity of the SSS program, including management of staff and budget, to be consistent with the SSS grant and in compliance with Federal TRIO Grant regulations.
2. Oversee recruitment of ICC students into the program and develop methods to encourage applications from persons who are members of groups that have not been traditionally represented in higher education.
3. Assure equal access to program services for all students.
4. Establish and maintain liaison with Financial Aid, Academic Advisors, Registrar, and other support services.
5. Disseminate information about availability of services to the college and service area.
6. Represent the program at all appropriate meetings, on and off campus.
7. Establish policies and procedures for participant needs assessment.
8. Establish, evaluate, and revise information and reporting systems.
9. Coordinate counseling, advising, and instructional functions of the project.
10. Review, revise, and monitor program budget to comply with institutional, state, and federal fiscal guidelines.
11. Coordinate internal and external program evaluation.
12. Supervise and evaluate the work of SSS staff members.
13. Work in conjunction with all other college programs and services to create an institutional climate for success of SSS-eligible students.
14. Academic coaching responsibilities.
15. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
1. Masters degree required, doctoral preferred from an institution accredited by a nationally recognized accreditation agency. Degree in developmental education, educational administration, or related field preferred.
2. TRiO experience highly desirable.
3. Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the areas of staff supervision, budget management, program development, and evaluation, reporting, and compliance with federal regulations.
4. Minimum of five (5) years of appropriate and relevant professional experience working in a TRIO federal program or similar related program for disadvantaged and at-risk college students.
5. Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and community, particularly those who qualify for SSS services; sensitivity to diverse learning styles and developmental needs.
6. Electronic media literacy and ability to use a variety of instructional media as necessary.
7. Experience with management of staff and budgets required; experience managing federal programs preferred.
8. Experience in overcoming barriers similar to those encountered by first generation, low-income students and students with disabilities preferred.
9. Strong time management, organizational, budgetary, and development skills.
10. High degree of organizational skills with an ability to manage multiple deadlines, tasks, projects, and assignments.
11. An educational philosophy in alignment with a small, rural comprehensive community college.
