SUMMARY

The College is seeking candidates to teach Communication Studies courses in the fall or winter or summer semesters on our Grand Rapids campus and/or our Lakeshore Campus. Adjunct needs are determined on a semester by semester basis. Communication Studies classes include COM 135: Interpersonal Communication and COM 131: Fundamentals of Public Speaking. Only adjunct faculty living in the state of Michigan can teach in person and virtual classes for GRCC.


Adjunct needs are determined on a semester by semester basis. GRCC classes are held at a variety of times, Monday through Saturday. In the fall and winter semesters, classes meet for 1.5 hours twice a week. In the summer semesters, classes meet 3 hours a day, two days a week. We offer Communication Studies classes in the following modalities: in person classes, online (asynchronous) and virtual (synchronous on zoom). For additional information about these modalities, see the Faculty Contract.

 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

● Teach GRCC course offerings in Communication Studies: Interpersonal Communication and/or Fundamentals of Public Speaking.

● Perform tasks normally expected of adjunct faculty members:
○ Follow the required syllabus template.
○ Use the required textbook as determined by the department.
○ Follow the Course Description and Course Objectives.
○ Effectively assess student performance using clear grading rubrics.
○ Maintain accurate records and grades
○ Adhere to student accommodations, as determined by the Disability Support Services office and required by law.
○ At a minimum, post a syllabus and utilize the gradebook on Blackboard (GRCCs Learning Management System).
○ Respond to questions received by email from students, the Department Chair, and college administrators within a reasonable time frame.
○ Create a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
○ Develop and implement teaching methods that employ interactive learning and a variety of teaching methods for all learning styles (small group, activities, etc.).
○ Incorporate new technologies and methods to enhance ones teaching,
○ Work with department faculty to ensure consistency in the curriculum.
○ Communicate with the Department Chair when student issues arise or when any type of help is needed.
○ Participate in professional development, as need or interest arises, and participate in professional development planned or suggested by the Department Chair or the administration.

 


JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education Credentials

● Masters Degree in Communication Studies or a Masters degree in a closely related field and 18 graduate credit hours in Communication Studies required. (Mandated by the Higher Learning Commission)

● Only candidates with a Masters Degree in Communication Studies or a Masters degree in a closely related field and 18 graduate credit hours in Communication Studies can be considered.

 


Work Experience

● College level teaching experience preferred.

● Teaching experience at a community college preferred, but not required.

 

Equipment Use/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

● Ability to learn and use Blackboard, GRCCs Learning Management System. Training is provided.

● Excellent written and oral communication skills.

 

Physical Demands

● Some evening work (grading, preparing for class, responding to email questions) will be needed.

● Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time.
