Academic and Career Advisor
Job Description
The Academic and Career Advisor is responsible for providing complete organizational information and services to students across a number of disciplines that may include admissions, financial aid, placement testing, academic advising, career services, international students, and disability services. The Academic and Career Advisor provides professional-level career counseling and/or academic advisement and provides direct student assistance in career development activities. The Academic and Career Advisor is responsible for coordinating internal and external partnerships to enhance services; making referrals for resources to assist in the students career and educational success; and serving as the liaison between high schools, students, employers and the college.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelors degree is required in higher education, student personnel/services, education, psychology, human resources or related field
- Minimum of two years full-time experience in the professional area or comparable related experience
- Must have administered programs directly related to the professional area for a minimum of two years
- Experience in counseling, psychology or related field with an adult population
- Masters preferred in higher education, student personnel/services, education, psychology, human resources or related field
KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of all certificate and associate programs to include Continuing EducationfKnowledge of college and community resources that support the whole student, not limited to disability support services, TRIO, DMSI, WOW, and student engagement
- Knowledge of federal financial aid rules and regulations, state-mandated requirements, transfer issues and articulation agreements, FERPA regulations, college policies and procedures, and relevant legislative changes.
- Knowledge of theories and best practices in Academic Advising and retention
- Knowledgeable in program development and program management principles and practices;
- Knowledgeable in career planning principles and practices;
- Knowledgeable in community networking principles and practices;
- Knowledge and ability to serve diverse populations and cultures;
- Knowledgeable of the one-stop model and best practices in higher education
- Excellent time management skills
- Ability to manage large amounts of information related to academic programs, college policies and procedures, and federal regulations
- Project management skills
- Demonstrated leadership practices and ability to think strategically to support change and innovation
- Ability to advise students on academic and career issues
- Fluent in customer service principles and demonstrate excellent ability to establish and maintain a professional working relationship
- Public speaking skills including the ability to engage groups as a part of workshops and structured presentations
- Ability to extract, analyze and interpret data
- Ability to work independently with little supervision
- Ability to prioritize work requirements and demonstrate independent decision making
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, and the general public

- Shares the knowledge of the college catalog, curricula, and programs
- Provides career, job and transfer articulation information to a diverse population of students
- Provides advising for prospective, new and current students in a variety of formats and locations including peak registration, individual advising sessions, classroom visits and group sessions
- Assists international students in providing comprehensive advising services to F-1 and other non-immigrant students; namely admissions, placement testing/interpretation, academic program planning, international academic credential evaluation procedures, work authorization, reinstatement, change of visa/tuition status, I-20 extensions, travel authorization procedures, and F-I student transfer guidelines
- Provides professional-level recommendations and advice for incoming and returning students on academic programs and progress, financial aid, internships, careers, and or other related programs
- Provides direct and comprehensive career counseling, advising and student development guidance which includes networking with employers and community leaders to obtain information on job opportunities and facilitate job referrals; initiating, creating, and coordinating programs designed to help students create resumes and cover letters, interviewing and job search skills, and/or other related items; and/or performing related duties.
- Develops, manages, and communicates resources through program promotions, class presentations, training sessions, and faculty and community partnerships.
- Develops new student support services and programs, new delivery formats, and partnerships with community agencies.
- Tracks, compiles, and collects information and prepares related reports in assigned program area; maintains related databases. Coordinate programs and projects for special populations within academic and career advising.
- Interprets Accuplacer, ALEKS, SAT, ACT, and TOEFL test results and/or identifies the proper prerequisites and course sequences for the student
- Remains current and knows how to use Colleague, Owl Link, Navigate, the email system, Microsoft Office suite applications, and other technologies or software required to guide students through all aspects of advising
- Enforces the completion of the developmental sequence once the student begins the process Communicates and updates students throughout the academic year including the benchmarks of 15, 30, 45 and 60 billable hours.
- Completes Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) appeal process
- Respond to and manage cases assigned through the Retention Alert System
- Provides guidance to students individually or in group settings regarding career decisions, degree plans, and transfer opportunities
- Identifies skill gaps and advises students on relevant workforce programs to meet their needs
- Review and analyze student needs and recommend appropriate success strategies and referrals
- Assists students with registration and appropriate course selection
- Utilizes data through a wide range of software and computer systems to track and analyze student progression and retention
- Analyzes student retention data and takes appropriate action to promote student success including case management of at-risk students
- Helps students understand current job markets by researching career options
- Facilitating student orientations
- Performed other duties as assigned

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions

- Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.
