Position Summary

The Opportunity: Skagit Valley College (SVC) is seeking qualified equity-minded applicants for a full-time, tenure track faculty position in Diesel Power Technology. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional classroom skills, enthusiasm for the subject matter, an inclusive and equity driven approach to teaching and learning, and innovative pedagogy and teaching strategies. Candidates should be able and excited to teach a variety of lecture and laboratory­ based coursework in the department. Faculty at SVC respect and work effectively with diverse students, colleagues, staff, and others in a campus climate that promotes innovative and equity- minded teaching, a diverse learning environment, and a strong focus on improving student success rates and addressing systemic inequities in access and achievement for all students.

 

SVC Diesel Power Technology Faculty typically teach an equivalent of 15 -18 instructional units per quarter (3 classes) and participate in college service. This position is expected to begin in Fall Quarter, September 2024. This position is based primarily at the Mount Vernon Campus; however, Instructors may be called upon to teach at the Whidbey Island Campus located in Oak Harbor. The College may offer a contract for a one-year temporary assignment if a tenure track candidate is not identified.

Duties and Responsibilities

   Incorporate an equity-minded approach to teaching and learning;

   Provide classroom and/or online instruction in Diesel Power Technology courses; and related content areas;

    Provide leadership for the Diesel Power Technology department, contributing expertise for the continued growth and improvement of the program;

   Provide leadership in developing the Diesel Power Technology program, developing innovative programming, curricula, and pedagogy that incorporate program and general education learning outcomes;

    Work closely with regional industry partners to develop and assist with training needs, manage the diesel lab environment and be responsible for all equipment used by the program, and maintain clean, safe training area, and recruit advisory committee members;

   Contribute to program marketing through participation in outreach and admissions activities;

    Advise and mentor Diesel Technology students in the program including those from underrepresented and underserved groups;

    Assist students in locating Diesel internships and job placements;

    Manage departmental budget and related administrative functions;

    Conduct ongoing development, assessment, and revision of curriculum that reflects innovative and inclusive pedagogy and advances in Diesel Power Technology;

    Work collaboratively with SVC faculty from other fields to develop appropriate curricula that reflect the diversity of student experience;

   Create a positive learning environment for students using diverse teaching methods to support and enhance student success;

   Address classroom issues in order to ensure a welcoming learning space for students of all backgrounds;

   Collaborate with other disciplines to increase enrollment and support student retention in the program with a focus on ameliorating equity gaps;

   Develop, monitor, and assess student learning outcomes and fully participate in the college's program review process;

   Develop, assess, and analyze program outcomes for the purpose of program improvement and enhanced student learning;

   Conduct program outreach by leading program briefing sessions for prospective students,

assisting with marketing and recruitment activities and leading student application reviews; Collaborate, facilitate, and participate in advisory board meetings;

    Participate in unit, department and other College activities, including College governance; Identify and pursue grants and other resources for the program to maintain industry standards;

   Pursue professional development to stay current in the field

    Recruit, screen, hire, and train part-time, associate faculty teaching similar disciplines;

    Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

   Build and maintain a Diesel Power Technology program that meets the needs of the college's students and the community;

   Demonstrated proficiency with modern diagnostic tools (PicoScope, PACCAR DAVIE4, Cummins lnsite, for example);

   Strong understanding of modern emissions control systems including turbochargers, exhaust gas recirculation, diesel particulate filters (DPF), selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems, and urea delivery systems;

    Ability to maintain partnerships and interagency community connections;

    Engage students through innovative instructional approaches such as service learning projects, and contextualized learning;

    Demonstrate commitment to equity-minded approaches to teaching and learning;

    Practice and adopt a variety of active learning strategies that facilitate student learning and that are inclusive of all cultures and backgrounds;

    Support students in accessing appropriate instructional and non-instructional services to facilitate student retention, completion and academic success for all students;

    Adapt to a variety of teaching situations, including interdisciplinary learning communities, and online and hybrid modalities;

    Express appropriate awareness of the history of underrepresented groups to promote an equitable work and learning environment;

    Recruit and inspire diverse student populations to embrace learning and facilitate completion;

    Work and interact effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators and other various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds in support of SVC's commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion;

    Act according to principles of integrity, respect, open and honest communication, collaboration, and compassion.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

    Associates degree in Diesel Technology or ability to complete associates degree within four years;

    Five (5) years of recent, full-time experience in the diesel/heavy equipment industry or closely related field or equivalent combination of education, training, and field experience totaling seven (7) years;

    Teaching experience in education or industry;

    Demonstrated commitment to promote equitable access and educational achievement of diverse students;

    Strong technological skills;

    Demonstrated actions to promote equitable access and educational achievement of diverse students.

 

Desired Qualifications:

   Bachelor's Degree in related field, or higher.

   Higher education teaching experience, especially in a community and technical college setting;

   Experience with emerging technology in the field such as electric vehicle systems;

   Evidence of industry training/professional development within last three years;

   Familiarity with the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence standards for diesel mechanics.

Other relevant certifications and training in automotive, marine, diesel or agricultural, or related fields.

 

Salary and Benefits:

   Initial annual salary placement ranges from $72,818-$97,091 for a standard 172-day contract. The College has a negotiated faculty wage scale in which placement on the salary structure is in accordance with the SVC Federation of Teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement.

   A standard 172-day contract is written annually for the period of September to June. Late contracts will be prorated on the basis of work days remaining in the contract year.

   This position is exempt from the overtime pay requirements of The Fair Labor Standards Act.

    This is a union represented position subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement.

   Salary, retirement, medical and insurance benefits are provided in accordance with state regulations and may be subject to change in accordance with legislative mandates and collective bargaining agreements.
