Vice President for Academic Affairs

Portland Community College

Job Description

Portland Community College (PCC) seeks a Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) to build on the Colleges successes. The next Vice President must be a dynamic, collaborative, successful and highly visible leader who can communicate an institutional instructional vision to both internal and external constituents. They must motivate and support their colleagues, institutional partners, and support students with the implementation of that vision, and help to advance the mission and to unify the College in alignment with the one-college structure to advance and achieve strategic goals.

The current strategic plan addresses long-term impacts of the pandemic on academic life, anticipates the Colleges future enrollment and demographic shifts in the community, and reflects the institutions commitment to equitable student success by delivering access to quality education in a collaborative culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The College is poised to become a national leader in student success and a top-level institution in terms of equitable student success.

As the largest post-secondary institution in Oregon, PCC serves more than 50,000 full-time and part-time students annually across a 1,500-square-mile district that spans five counties. The College advances equitable and sustainable economic prosperity for students and the greater PCC community by providing high quality education with flexible delivery methods, fostering a culture of belonging for all, being innovative and enterprising, and preparing students to thrive in work and life.

Portland Community College is regionally accredited through the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) as one institution with four comprehensive campuses, 10 centers, and dozens of independent locations throughout the Portland metropolitan area offering courses and providing student services. These locations offer job training, specialized programs, and transfer courses.

PCC offers credit courses that lead to either two-year degrees or one-year certificate programs, and provides credit and academic non-credit short-term training, high school equivalency programs, pre-college courses, and other academic opportunities for life-long learning. Students have access to face-to-face and online learning options to give students the flexibility necessary to meet their needs.

There are approximately 90 programs offered at Portland Community College through a unique system of Academic and Career Pathways. There are six pathways that comprise the curriculum of the college and help students identify career goals. The six academic pathways are: Arts, Humanities, Communication, and Design; Healthcare and Emergency Professions; Business and Entrepreneurship; Construction, Manufacturing Technology, and Transportation; Science, Technology Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); and Public Service, Education, and Social Sciences.

Reporting directly to the President, the VPAA operates as the Chief Academic Officer and Accreditation Liaison Officer for the College. The VPAA provides overall strategic leadership for educational program development and implementation; curriculum planning and development, including online learning, workforce development, and continuing education; and instructional support for a multi-campus college. This position also provides college-wide leadership to develop and maintain the comprehensive assessment program; ensures programs align with the Colleges mission, values, and strategic plan; and serves as the Accreditation Liaison Officer between the College and the NWCCU.
