Position description

The Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences is committed to academic excellence, and to enhancing access, inclusion, and success of our diverse faculty, staff, and students. The office is recruiting for the role of Associate Vice Chancellor, Integrative Research.

UC San Diego seeks in the Associate Vice Chancellor for Integrative Research an inspirational scientific leader with a deep research background and proven administrative experience to work closely with faculty, staff, and administrators within the Health Sciences and beyond, fostering excellence in research and discovery, enhancing faculty recognition and distinction, and promoting multidisciplinary research activities. The Associate Vice Chancellor will work closely with a broad community of stakeholders to envision and achieve Vice Chancellor's strategic goals that align with UC San Diego Health Sciences' future plans and tripartite mission.

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, the Associate Vice Chancellor is responsible for developing and implementing a cross-disciplinary research strategy across Health Sciences in order to foster a stronger scientific environment. As the Vice Chancellor's primary representative in matters related to fundamental and non-clinical trials research, the Associate Vice Chancellor works in close partnership with campus and University offices to provide guidance on emerging trends, extramural funding opportunities, and issues related to the research infrastructure. The Associate Vice Chancellor serves a critical role of fostering a diverse community of scholars who push the boundaries of scientific discovery that will not only advance the academic biomedical community but also transform the lives of patients locally and nationally.

The Associate Vice Chancellor will use their broad and diverse leadership skills to operate within a highly complex organization; that includes collaborating in close partnership with Health Sciences leadership. The incumbent will also foster strong relationships with senior campus administrators at UC San Diego, University of California System, and a diverse set of faculty and staff. The ideal candidate will represent Health Sciences and UC San Diego effectively; build strong relationships with internal and external constituents, and be an effective advocate for the University.

The academic appointment is expected to be at the Full Professor level. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Series will include Ladder Rank and In-Residence. A link to the full descriptions of each series is listed below:

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

* Terminal degree (MD, PhD, PharmD, DrPH, etc.).

* 10+ years of demonstrated dynamic leadership skills and experience in biomedical research; a high level of conceptual and strategic thinking.
* 10+ years of a personal record of distinguished academic or research achievement.

Preferred qualifications

* Outstanding academic record with experience as a senior administrator in an academic medical center environment, with the ability to innovate and generate new ideas.
* National or international reputation in a biomedical science discipline; membership in national societies (e.g. National Academy of Medicine; National Academy of Science).
* Demonstrated success in enhancing the research agenda of an academic unit or program, in responding to faculty needs and building environments that enhance research innovation, and in building programs and environments that enhance research productivity.
* Demonstrated ability to build a sense of community and to actively engage faculty and staff in support of a shared strategic vision.
* Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills; the ability to listen attentively to varied perspectives and foster a supportive and collaborative working environment.
