Instructor, Massage Therapy

Job Description

Occupational Summary

The Part-time Instructor, Therapeutic Massage will provide instruction in the fundamentals, applications, ethics and the business of massage.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides excellent customer service and assistance to internal and external customers through walk-in, telephone and email
  • Provides instruction to students in assigned program areas
  • Constructs, administers and grades examinations
  • Maintains all required College records including attendance, grade reports, roll books, etc.
  • Ensures students are using the textbooks prescribed by the NC Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy
  • Ensures that students are complying with all safety procedures in the classroom and lab
  • Assures program compliance with certifying agencies guidelines
  • Promotes community awareness of program opportunities and builds relationships with community development/partner agencies
  • Makes recommendations on books, materials, equipment and supplies for the program
  • Performs other job-related duties and projects in support of the Colleges mission, core values and goals

Minimum Qualifications

Instructors shall be trained in the subject taught, and shall have:
At least two years of professional experience in the subject area; and received certification to teach a trademarked modality if such certification is available.

Massage Therapy License through the NC Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy.
 
Instructors shall have one of the following professional credentials:
1. Be licensed under the NC practice act for at least two years; OR
2. Have a Bachelors degree from an accredited post-secondary institution with at least 12 semester credit hours of academic coursework in the subject area they teach from such institution; or
3. Hold a state license or certification from a state other than North Carolina in massage and bodywork therapy for at least two years; if no such credential is available, hold a valid certification in massage and bodywork therapy for at least two years from an agency whose certification program is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. Preferred:
Associates degree in massage therapy or related subject from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

Previous teaching experience.

  • NC Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy requirements 
  • Adult learning theory, concepts and teaching methodology
  • Curriculum design and development
  • Knowledge of record keeping procedures
  • Methods for evaluation of student performance
  • Knowledge of college programs, services and procedures relating to workforce development programs
Skills
  • Proficiency in planning, organization, communication, training, supervisory and interpersonal skills
  • Strong problem-solving and time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and possession of a high degree of discretion, judgement, tact and poise
  • Works effectively in a team environment with a customer service focus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office

  • Present information to internal and external customers, top management, and public groups
  • Ability to multi-task, organize, prioritize and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with an attention to detail
  • Ability to collect and organize data and information
  • Maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Handle confidential information with absolute discretion 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with culturally diverse student population, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities and socioeconomic levels
