The Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) supports researchers and scholars in their research endeavors, providing administrative support for funding, proposals, compliance, invention disclosures and other important issues. ORIs lead units and their functions are listed below.
The Research Development Office facilitates the realization of strategic research objectives by enhancing collaborative research and laying the foundation for sustainable research growth. Multidisciplinary projects corresponding to the Universitys focused research initiatives are nurtured and supported, and funding opportunities for faculty and researchers are made available in a centralized, easy-to-access portal. Support for large-scale projects is provided through strategy development, technical writing and budget creation.
The Office of Research Commercialization protects and promotes university research discoveries and intellectual property, works with and guides industry partners and boosts the acceleration of startups. This unit connects NC States research community to industry and startups by strategically evaluating, protecting and licensing technology.
Sponsored Programs and Regulatory Compliance Services provides central research administration support. Sponsored Programs assists with proposal submission, agreement negotiation and administration of sponsored projects. Regulatory Compliance oversees conflicts of interest and commitment management, export controls, human and animal subjects protections, facility security matters and research integrity.
ORI is based on NC States Centennial Campus, which sets the standard for mixed-use university property that combines lab and office space with college classrooms, living quarters and recreational opportunities. It is what innovation in the 21st century should look like – collaborative, innovative and collegial. Centennial Campus includes two campuses – the Core Campus and Centennial Biomedical Campus, which includes the College of Veterinary Medicine. Spanning 1,227 acres, Centennial encompasses 72 corporate, government and nonprofit partners and more than 75 NC State research centers, institutes, laboratories and department units.
As part of the Universitys Master Plan, Centennial Campus is part of a larger effort to create neighborhoods that are steeped in character and are organized around attractive, lively open spaces. Centennials master plan demonstrates a rich tapestry of footpaths, smart buildings and natural environments to foster NC States guiding principles for development.
Essential Job Duties
The primary role of the Vice Chancellor is to provide dynamic leadership for the research enterprise within NC State and to strengthen its links with the external community, both in expanded partnerships and in national leadership on significant issues in the research community. The Vice Chancellor provides charismatic intellectual leadership in articulating and implementing the overall research and partnership vision.
The Vice Chancellor will work in close partnership with the Chancellor, and the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor.
The successful candidate must manifest a deep interest in and appreciation for the values and mission of NC State University. The Vice Chancellor advises on major developing issues on and off campus, including key operational issues and issues of policy, regulations, programs and institutional structure.
The Vice Chancellor will have the leadership skills and requisite experience to develop and nurture a strong set of relationships, inspire professionals to meet ambitious goals, and create exciting synergies among colleges and academic programs. The successful candidate will also bring innovative thinking coupled with proven leadership and managerial skills gained in a comparable first-tier institution of higher education.

- Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Development and Operations and Chief of Staff
- Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Finance and Business Administration
- Associate Vice Chancellor for Sponsored Programs and Regulatory Compliance
- University Attending Veterinarian
- Center and Institute Directors: Institute for Transportation Research and Education; PowerAmerica; NC Institute of Climate Studies; NC Sea Grant, NC Space Grant, and Water Resources Research Institute; Center for Human Health and Environment
The Vice Chancellor also oversees a large number of interdisciplinary centers, programs, core facilities, and institutes.
Specifically, the Vice Chancellor will:
- Significantly grow relations with federal agencies, strengthening the research portfolio in this area.
- Work closely with research sponsors from the private and public sectors, including identification of emerging funded research opportunities and development of industry partnerships, as well as contract and grant negotiations.
- Build and nurture relationships across the 10 NC State colleges, as well as the external community, by expanding partnerships with other universities and research organizations and with potential corporate and foundation sponsors.
- Expand the range of faculty engaged in research.
- Advise the Chancellor on allocation of institutional research funding and participate in decisions regarding use of research overhead funds.
- Work closely with peer Vice Chancellors and other appropriate leadership to promote and expand NC States Centennial Campus, seek corporate and foundation support, and significantly expand and further broaden the research portfolio.
- Work closely with the Executive Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration in the administration of accounts for contracts and grants.
- Work with the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement to expand endowments for research and graduate education.
- Support the expansion of international research relationships and activities.
- Oversee the development of and adherence to the policies and regulations in areas including technology transfer, intellectual property, conflict of interest and human subjects.
- Play a leadership role in recruiting and retaining stellar research executives.
Beyond the University, the Vice Chancellor will be a leader in addressing state and national issues of compelling interest to the research community.
Other Responsibilities
While there are many challenges and opportunities for the Vice Chancellor, among the key priorities are the following:
- Grow research funding: Currently the research portfolio is strong. The University has had great success in winning external funding from a wide range of state and federal agencies as well as through industry partnerships. The Vice Chancellor will further develop this portfolio in unique and creative ways by driving new funding in cross-disciplinary programs. The goal is to significantly increase the portfolio by focusing on large, cross-disciplinary endeavors that contribute to solving the most pressing issues that face society both today and in the future. The Vice Chancellor will not only engage and develop these partnerships but will also mentor and support faculty in strengthening their individual efforts in this area. It is believed that there will be opportunities for the University to expand its relationships with the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense and private foundations, in particular.
- Continue to build corporate and other external partnerships: NC State has done an outstanding job of building partnerships across all industry sectors. The University and its Centennial Campus lead the nation in these partnerships and have opportunities to extend this lead through new and expanded endeavors. The areas of commercialization and technology/transfer have been strong suits for NC State, and continuing on that trajectory of success will bring great benefits to the University and its partners.
- Ensure compliance and adherence to regulations: As NC State continues on its aggressive trajectory, it is highly important to maintain compliance in all aspects of partnerships, agreements, and contracts. The Vice Chancellor will lead the University in these complex issues to make certain that risk is effectively managed.
Minimum Education and Experience
The ideal candidate for the position of Vice Chancellor will have the credentials, demonstrated leadership and administrative ability to successfully facilitate research, develop partnerships and address critical issues for the research community. The successful candidate will also possess a strong record of professional accomplishment and a high level of recognition in the academic community. A doctoral degree and credentials to support the rank of Professor with tenure in an appropriate academic unit is required.
Other Required Qualifications
The successful candidate must possess the following:
- Credentials: A strong record of accomplishment appropriate for appointment as a tenured full Professor, including both an exemplary record of research and success in leading a research enterprise.
- The vision and strategic perspective to further develop the overall research portfolio.
- Proven expertise and success in obtaining federal funding. Demonstrated success in enhancing federal support, and access to networks that can facilitate working with federal agencies.
- Experience within technology transfer and commercialization, combined with successful academic faculty experience.
- Leadership: Successful experience that demonstrates readiness to provide creative and innovative leadership for a growing enterprise, and to build an infrastructure adequate to support that growth; participation in the national and international dialogue about research priorities and interdisciplinary areas for growth; an entrepreneurial approach to problem-solving.
- Entrepreneurship: Present as a charismatic individual that boldly leads an organization to new levels of excellence, funding and exposure. An understanding of, and first-hand experience in, connecting with business. Effectively navigate, with a business approach, the inherent political environment associated with the academic environment.
- Management: Outstanding administrative and personnel management ability. Prefer to lead through strategy and outstanding leadership skills rather than micromanaging.
- Communication and collaboration: Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other leaders and units.
- Partnerships: Commitment to innovative partnerships; direct experience in creating interdisciplinary centers and working closely with the private sector and funding agencies for sponsorship agreements.
- Faculty research support: Experience with and understanding of the challenges of research, and leading with integrity. An understanding of how research drives the economy, and possession of a record of skill in assisting faculty in the advancement of their research; understanding of the infrastructure needed to support faculty research.
- Breadth of research: Deep intellectual curiosity and an understanding of the breadth of research activity at a large research university – including the areas of research strength of most land-grant universities, as well as traditional liberal arts fields that are essential to the strength of any great institution and proven to enhance impacts of technical research.
- Research policies and regulations: An informed perspective on research policies and regulations in areas including technology transfer, intellectual property, conflict of interest and human subjects.
- Build community and inclusive excellence.
- Efficiency: Determination to assist in improving the business efficiency of the University.
