Within the Universitys College of Liberal Arts, the Department of Anthropology invites applications for a (benefits eligible) tenure-track position in Biological Anthropology (Forensic Anthropology/Bioarchaeology) beginning fall semester 2025. We seek a broadly trained biological anthropologist for our small department and our Forensic Anthropology Identification and Recovery (FAIR) Lab who is prepared to teach undergraduate classes, including biological anthropology and human evolution at the introductory level, forensic anthropology, bioarchaeology, human osteology, paleopathology, and/or other more advanced topical courses in their methodological and/or geographical area of expertise.

The candidate should have an active research agenda in biological anthropology, ideally with expertise in both forensic anthropology and bioarchaeology. Areas of research interest might include skeletal trauma analysis, disease and health, and/or social and biological investigations of race as a concept. The ideal candidate is committed to diversity and social justice in research and teaching and is actively engaged in decolonizing methodologies and antiracist approaches to biological anthropology. A doctoral degree in Anthropology or related discipline is required by time of the appointment.

The candidate will pursue their own independent research and will be provided space in the departments Forensic Anthropology Identification and Recovery (FAIR) Lab. Among other impactful collaborations, the FAIR Lab has a strong relationship with NH state law enforcement and the scholar would have the opportunity to participate in forensic case work for the state. Preference will be given to candidates who are able to contribute to bioarchaeological and forensic case work, engage in forensic search and recoveries, and provide detailed skeletal analyses in collaboration with faculty in the FAIR Lab and as part of their ongoing research. The candidate will show the promise of scholarly excellence as well as enthusiasm for undergraduate teaching and mentoring. The position requires teaching 2 undergraduate courses per semester.

PhD (awarded by August 2025) in anthropology with a research focus on biological anthropology. Geographic area of interest is open. Candidates should demonstrate an active research agenda and strong practical skills in applied bioarchaeological and forensic casework and field work activities in the context of student mentorship; teaching effectiveness (ideally with at least two courses as sole instructor); an ability to strengthen our departmental offerings in biological anthropology classes; and a desire and ability to mentor undergraduate anthropology students with either academic or applied career goals.

Candidates should show evidence of their commitment to diversity and social justice and demonstrate their ability to work with faculty, staff and students as well as community groups of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation, disability, and ethnic backgrounds. Advancing diversity and dialogue around social in-justice (both in the past and present) is of vital importance for our department and the University of New Hampshire.

The faculty in the Anthropology Department demonstrate strong scholarly productivity and exceptional leadership in public humanities and social science research. Much of their work confronts the legacy of colonialism and ethical issues concerning equity and social justice. The faculty regularly collaborate with and advocate for descendant communities in their work with the Seacoast African American Cultural Center (SAACC), the Indigenous New Hampshire Collaborative Collective (INHCC), and the Native American Indigenous Studies (NAIS) minor at UNH. Candidates should show a similar commitment to public engagement and scholarly initiatives that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
