Research Specialist II
Job Description
The Trapecar Lab at the John Hopkins University School of Medicine - All Childrens Hospital and the Institute for Fundamental Biomedical Research in St. Petersburg, Florida, is seeking a Research Specialist II. The Research Specialist II will be responsible for independent scientist and administrative activities in our laboratory. We are looking for a new team member that is highly motivated, energetic, and independent. The ideal candidate will have an interest in modeling multiorgan human physiology and the application of such advanced in vitro models to gain a better understanding of the fundamental origins of immunometabolic diseases. The individual requires a good understanding of the overall objectives and interests of our research.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Design and perform experiments following established procedures, including whole blood/tissue processing, ELISA, Microscopy, DNA and RNA extractions, PCR, sequencing, biomarker, and cytokine multiplex assays.
- Establish and maintain new cell cultures, including human organoids and iPS cells and make protocol modifications as needed.
- Operate laboratory equipment such as ow cytometer, 3D bioprinter, bio-safety cabinet, centrifuge, incubator, ultra-low temperature freezer, LN2 freezer, multi-mode plate reader, light microscope, thermocycler, and others.
- Keep detailed records of all the testing and help analyze the resulting data.
- Disseminate study information directly to colleagues and collaborators.
- Participate in the writing of papers and presentations for meetings/conferences.
- Assist with training of new colleagues on specific lab procedures.
- Use databases to maintain sample inventories and related data.
- Operate lab computers for data entry and maintain accurate data records.
- Assist with general lab maintenance, lab safety, manage and make purchases of basic laboratory supplies and specific project necessities and maintain necessary lab inventory.
- Perform necessary administrative tasks such as but not limited to grant progress reports.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Excellent mammalian cell or cell line culture skills.
- Conversant with various analytical methodologies including but not limited to ow cytometry,
- ELISA/Luminex, and microscopy.
- If not conversant, the expectation is for the candidate to get acquainted with the technology and become independent within six months of joining.
- Knowledge of human immune cell enrichment and manipulation.
- Knowledge of cell-based binding assays, surface antigen and intracellular staining methodology.
- Excellent record keeping, organizational, written and verbal skills.
- Familiar with routine immune functional assays for human immune cell populations.
- Able to set up assays and conduct technical troubleshooting analysis.
- Able to analyze data and provide a critical interpretation of results.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills for interfacing with other functional groups.
Physical Requirements:
- Employee may remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for up to 40% of the time.
- The employee is required to operate small laboratory tools that require manual dexterity.
- Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screens, paper reports/documents, charts, and results.
- Visual acuity is required to distinguish ne gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens (including via a microscope).
- Laboratory environment - Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed.
- Must refer to and are expected to comply with procedure manuals, follow proper laboratory protocols and safety policy/procedures, and be familiar with material data safety sheets in assigned work areas.
- Able to read and understand all Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) guidelines applicable to assigned work area.
- Working in laboratory where there may be discomfort due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and working around lab equipment.
- Research areas may include animal, human, human products, DNA, and radiation protocols.
- Use of personal protective equipment may be advised or required.
- May transport equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another (in the laboratory).
- May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with proper training, or precautions/lifting aides (example: supply boxes). In some areas workspace is limited.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field
- Two years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
- Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional education may substitute for the required experience.

Starting Salary Range: $41,300 - $72,300 Annually (Commensurate with experience)
