Essential Job Duties
This position is a mid-level international student and scholar advising position. In addition to carrying a large advising load for various academic departments according to our liaison model, an International Student & Scholar Advisor II serves as a mentor for International Student & Scholar Advisor I and may be involved in training.
International Student and/or Scholar Services:
- Independently carry out all delegated international student advising processes including support of special populations such as sponsored students, study abroad exchange students, Intensive English Program students, J-1 Student Interns, 3+2 and other “off-model” student populations.
- This includes but is not limited to: Completing, processing, and issuing visa certificates for F & J students; process program extensions as well as changes in level or curriculum, and other F/J issues and benefits including dependents, employment, travel, changes of status, reinstatements, etc.
- Independently carry out all delegated international scholar processes including but not limited to: initial DS-2019 document issuance, program extensions, transfers, amendments, etc.
- Advise Faculty, Advisors, and Departmental Personnel (Graduate Services Coordinators, Personnel Representatives, etc.,) in matters related to international student or scholar processing, eligibility requirements, immigration issues, opportunities, problems, etc. Serve as a college liaison for specific college populations (including students, scholars, student interns, faculty and staff);
- Maintain knowledge of and properly disseminate academic policy information to students, other advising staff, and university partners, particularly as it relates to immigration;
- Stay abreast of regulatory changes impacting F-1 and J-1 students and scholars and of procedural changes at USCIS, SEVP, ICE, DOS, and other governmental agencies impacting international students and scholars;
- Staff weekly drop-in advising and scholar check-in in rotation with other advisors.
Other Responsibilities
Other responsibilities:
- Assist with major recurring and special programs throughout the year such as new student orientation, welcome parties, workshops (e.g., tax, OPT or CPT), receptions, etc.;
- Prepare and present training sessions to colleagues, students and scholars, and NC State staff and faculty;
- Actively participate in OIS staff meetings, policy discussions and case review sessions, workshops, trainings, and other professional functions or university committees;
- Assist in completing and maintaining updates to the OIS Advisor Manual and assist in maintaining updates to our Policies and Procedures database and corresponding updates to that data in our website;
- Maintain continuous technical training in regulatory matters (participation in NAFSA, NCAIE, and other activities) and continuous technical training;
- Assist with maintenance of OIS front desk tasks- such as answering phones and OIS inbox as needed; and
- Assist with other projects as needed and/or assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience
Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelors degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
Other Required Qualifications
- At least one year of experience as an international student or scholar advisor
- Prior ARO/DSO advising experience
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and advise on F-1 and J-1 regulations
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to provide clear, correct, and respectful communications in a timely manner
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, and ability to multi-task with accuracy and efficiency in a busy, time-sensitive environment with multiple deadlines and competing priorities.
- Must be able to work independently and on a team with others.
- Experience with Google Apps Suite or Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters degree in International Studies, Higher Education and Student Affairs, Counseling, Social Work, Foreign Language, Communications, or related field.
- Experience with a third-party software system for SEVIS reporting such as Sunapsis, Terra Dotta, ISSM, etc.
- Familiarity with WordPress
- Prior experience living or studying abroad
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
Per federal requirements US citizenship or Permanent Residence is required.
Valid NC Driver's License required
