The English Language Learner (ELL) Advisor will provide information and counsel to students regarding their academic pursuits and progress. The ELL Advising will occur both individually and in group settings concerning all aspects of academic life. This position is a Career and Technical Education (CTE) grant-funded position and the ELL Advisor will work with and embrace a diverse student population.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelors degree in student personnel, sociology, education, psychology, human resources, or a related field required
- Three years of full-time experience in the professional area
- Must be fluent in Spanish or French
- Experience in counseling, psychology, or related field with an adult population
- Experience working with and advising college-level students
PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS
- Masters degree in student personnel, sociology, education, psychology, human resources or related field preferred.
- Knows community agencies, and current legislation that impacts ELL students. Serves as a resource to ELL students.
- Familiarity with financial aid guidelines and their impact on the academic advisement of ELL students

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

- Keep current on legislation, philosophy, and trends in academic advisement that impact ELL students in particular; and incorporate this knowledge into the PGCC advising program
- Work in collaboration with the VP of Student Services and PGCPS to address ELL enrollment and possible marketing solutions to increase enrollment in areas where special populations are not represented
- Maintain a CTE student advising load and work directly with students to accomplish educational goals by developing individual academic plans based on students abilities and interests; particular focus will be guiding ELL students and partnering with other departments that serve ELL students.
- Provide students with information focused on achieving academic success including topics such as registration, transitioning to college, academic progress, financial aid, exploration of various fields of study and career choice, change of major, and graduation petitions
- Convey and interpret academic rules and regulations, academic prerequisites, programs, majors, and courses of study, and in-bound and out-bound transfer and college policies
- Present workshops and seminars on various topics to assist ELL students in achieving academic success
- Refer students to related offices such as Counseling & Health Services, Academic Achievement Center, Career & Transfer Services, etc. as appropriate
- Develop new methods and tools to connect and communicate with students
- Participating in orientation, admissions, and international student programming
- Assist the Program Director of Academic Advising with early intervention outreach to ELL students
- Demonstrate the ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks, and prioritize duties
- Work with marketing and enrollment teams to create multi-language communication for students and parent/family support
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Skilled in providing direct services to a diverse population in a busy office setting
- Ability to make small group presentations, and work as a part of a team in the development, delivery, and evaluation of programs and services with a diverse client population
- High technology acumen to research, identify, acquire, and implement new technology features and functionality to improve users (faculty, staff, and students) experience
- Demonstrated understanding of shared governance
- Ability to identify and implement ideas that work, assess and eliminate processes that do not work, seek new ideas, and decipher and implement applicable best practices
- Knowledgeable about current research, trends best practices, technologies, and mandates impacting academic advising services including programs and services for students who are academically and /or economically disadvantaged, students with disabilities, and other special populations
- Knowledgeable about and provide leadership in the development of proposals seeking external funding for departmental programs
- Knowledgeable about credentialing, licensure, and legal requirements to assure compliance in the delivery of academic, transfer, and career advising services
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills as well as computer proficiency
- Bilingual proficiency in written and oral Spanish and standard English
- Working knowledge of Navigate
- Working knowledge of degree evaluation system (Colleague or similar product)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office-related equipment, such as but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions
OTHER REQUIRMENTS
- Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.
- As required by the 1986 Immigration Act, be prepared to present acceptable documentation showing your identity and that you are a U.S. citizen or an alien who is authorized to work.
- A background investigation will be conducted prior to the offer of employment. A signed authorization for the release of personal information will be required if selected for an interview.
