About the Department

Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering

The MAE department currently has 49 tenure-track faculty, 7 professional track teaching faculty, and 16 staff members. The Department has an enrollment of over 1,200 undergraduates and 400 graduate students. The department is housed in Engineering Building III, a four-story, 250,000-square-foot facility built in 2010. NC States location on Centennial Campus, combined with its proximity to the Research Triangle Park and neighboring universities, provides extensive opportunities for academic and industrial interaction and collaboration. Further information on the department can be found at: http://www.mae.ncsu.edu.

The University is located in the technology-rich Research Triangle metropolitan area. The Research Triangle area is frequently recognized in national surveys as one of the best places to live in the U.S. We enjoy outstanding public schools, affordable housing, and great weather, all in the proximity of the mountains and the seashore. To continue providing job-ready graduates for North Carolinas ever-growing tech economy, the states largest public university will get even larger in the next few years.

North Carolina State University will add about 4,000 students – 2,000 undergraduates and 2,000 graduate students – in engineering disciplines and computer science over the next five years. The growth will push NC States College of Engineering to around 14,000 students and the universitys total student population to more than 40,000. We expect about 30% of these new students to be in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

The growth will be funded by Engineering North Carolinas Future, a state legislative initiative that will provide NC State $20 million over the next two years to hire additional faculty as well as support staff including academic advisors and laboratory personnel to support the larger student body. The legislature is also providing NC State $30 million to support facility upgrades to accommodate these additional STEM students.
